Petrykiwka painting workshop at the 4th International LABYRINTH Street Art Festival

29 July, 2022, 18:00 - 31 July, 2022, 16:30
Free

Olha Palii guides the participants of her course on their first step into the magical art world of Petrykiwka painting. The Petrykiwka-Malerei originates from the village of Petrykivka, which is the most famous centre of Ukrainian decorative folk painting. The technique of Petrykivka painting emerged in its current form in the 17th and 18th centuries. The tradition of decorating clothes and homes with ornaments dates back to the pre-Christian era. It was believed that ornaments served as amulets - they protected against otherworldly forces and brought prosperity. Later, the Cossacks used petrykiwka to decorate their weapons and huts in Zaporizhia.

Petrykiwka is rich in symbolism and bears witness to careful observation of the local flora and fauna. Pure and bright colours are typical. Things like beauty, love and family are thematised. Petrykiwka is designed to soothe the eye and delight the soul. In 2013, this unique art was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
