BabelMatrix or Ukrainian Magic Cube: Translation as freedom of reading

May 30, 17:00 - 18:00
Free

BabelMatrix is an international project, co-funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Commission. The goal of the project is to make contemporary Ukrainian literature accessible to readers from different countries and linguistic backgrounds. It is a multilingual digital anthology in which Ukrainian texts coexist with their translations, creating a vibrant space for cultural dialogue.

The project brings together European partners, translators and publishers with a common goal: to make literature written in less widely spoken languages more visible in the European cultural space. And today the voice of Ukrainian literature in Europe is becoming increasingly audible.

During the event we will discuss:
— about translation as a tool of freedom and mutual understanding;
— about the presence of Ukrainian literature in Europe;
— about the new BabelMatrix catalog, which introduces international readers to Ukrainian authors and translators.

The catalog presents texts by contemporary Ukrainian writers in several languages, as well as stories by translators who help ensure that Ukrainian voices are heard worldwide. This is not just a conversation about books; it is a conversation about the cultural presence of Ukraine in Europe — through literature, language, and translation.
