Translation workshop in Vienna
September 19, 15:00 - 18:00
Free

What happens when a literary text changes its language? How do you translate a sentence that is actually untranslatable? And why does a poem sound a little different in every language?
Together with Ganna Gnedkova and Michael Pietrucha, the participants work with Ukrainian poetry, wordplay, and short literary texts. Their own translations are created, different solutions are compared, and discussions take place:
What is more important – rhythm or meaning?
Preserving or adapting foreignness?
Explaining a joke – or inventing a new one?
It’s not about finding the one „right“ translation; it’s about trying, rejecting, and re-formulating – and about discovering how much creativity lies in literary translation.
Limited number of participants: number of people – registration required: literaktiv@gmail.com
Starting at 18:30, the event continues with Presentation of the Ukrainian Magic Cube and his digital anthology of Ukrainian literature.
Translation workshop in Vienna: not just listening; translating yourself.

What happens when a literary text changes its language? How to translate a sentence that seems impossible to translate at all? And why the same poem sounds slightly different in every language?
On September 19, the European project Ukrainian Magic Cube invites you to an interactive translation workshop in Vienna.
Together with Hanna Gnedkova and Mikhail P’yatroy, the participants and participants will work with Ukrainian poetry, the play of words, and short literary texts. We will create our own translations, compare different solutions, and discuss:
Which is more important – rhythm or meaning?
To preserve the text's strangeness or to adapt it?
To explain why – or to build a new one?
There is no point in trying to find a «correct» translation. We will try different options, discard some of them, and rewrite the text – and together we will see how much creative work is hidden behind the translated text.
The number of seats is limited – prior registration is required: literaktiv@gmail.com
And at 18:30 we ask you to stay for Presentation of the Ukrainian Magic Cube This is an introduction to the digital anthology of Ukrainian literature.
